“I highly doubt any $40 million Broadway spectacles could pack such an emotional wallop into two-and-a-half hours as Mr. Watts does into 45 minutes.” - BroadwayWorld.com
About the Show
Saltbush is an exquisite interactive journey through the culture and landscape of Aboriginal Australia, celebrated through live dance, music, song and stories. Internationally acclaimed Italian company Compagnia TPO has worked in collaboration with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians to create another beautiful piece in the highly acclaimed Children’s Cheering Carpet series.
The Saltbush narrative centres on the journey of two friends from different Aboriginal backgrounds as they cross Australia on foot, and is performed on a touch-sensitive floor using infra-red imaging technology that triggers images and sound. Their journey sees them travel across diverse Australian landscapes (countries) —- river country, an urban landscape, desert and the sea. The journey is one of discovering the land (country), growing an understanding and acknowledging how it challenges or provokes personal journeys. Children are invited to explore, play and dance with the performers as the landscape unfolds around them, providing a unique immersive experience, where the audience can become part of this visually beautiful journey.
TPO’s award winning artistry in multi-media theatre for young people is combined with the work of acclaimed professional Aboriginal artists Lou Bennett (music), Delwyn Mannix (visual art), Deon Hastie (dance) and Sasha Zahra (dramaturgy) under the artistic direction of former Come Out director and Insite Arts partner Jason Cross and TPO director Davide Venturini.
Through its sensor and infra-red imaging technology, TPO’s Children’s Cheering Car¬pet concept allows the children to interact, play and perform in the production and provides an immersive experience of the artwork. This also provides a unique experience for parents and teachers as they watch the children become involved.
The project is the result of collaboration between acclaimed Italian theatre company TPO and Australian Aboriginal artists. The work was a co-production with Teatro Metastasio Stabile della Toscana in Prato and was commissioned by the Australian Festival for Young People (Come Out 2009) in Adelaide with the assistance of the City of Melbourne’s ArtPlay and produced by Insite Arts.
