Ben Quilty Visit
ANZA members were treated to a visit by Archibald prize winning artist Ben Quitly at our recent September Global Café. Ben presented a very interesting talk about his experiences as the War Artist for the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan.
As a war artist. Quilty joined the ranks of such legendary artists as Arthur Streeton. This was a unique experience for Quilty as he has always had a keen interest in the role-playing and coming of age of young men in contemporary Australian society.
Unlike most media who have restricted access to troops in Afghanistan, as war artist, Quilty was an independent voice to the experiences of the young men and women. He photographed the soldiers and produced 40 drawings during his deployment and then invited many of the soldiers to his studio after their tour of duty.
Ben Quilty is displaying a collection of his works at the Korean International Art Fair until Sept 17th. http://kiaf.org/index.html
