Seodaemun Prison Walking Tour

 In
ANZA Korea is teaming up with Deutscher Club Seoul for a special joint walking tour of Seodaemun Prison!
Led by Prof. Mason, this is a guided visit to a few sites of Korea’s quest for national independence in the shadow of Japanese colonial rule. These are less-visited and less-known but fascinating sites very close to busy and modern downtown; our walking-tour will conveniently meet and finish at a popular subway station.
Once gathered, we will walk a very short distance to the 14-meter-high historic granite Independence Gate, built 1896-7 and modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Our guide will thoroughly explain its history, significance and symbolism. We will then tour the other memorial shrines of Seodae-mun [West Gate] Independence Park nearby, including the Independence Hall, the Patriotic Martyr Monument and the March 1st Declaration of Independence Monument, hearing colorful stories associated with each.
We will then tour the nearby Seodaemun Prison History Hall, a special memorial museum-complex first built near the end of the Joseon Dynasty (~1910). This was where Japanese policemen tortured and even executed Korean venerated independence-activists, and we will see the authentic old halls and jail-cells, with plenty of historical exhibitions including videos, old photos and artifacts.
Some of it is graphic and the torture-scenes can be disturbing, be forewarned. Please join us for this opportunity to see and learn some fundamental aspects of early-20th-Century Korean history!
